MAYON VOLCANO

LEGAZPI, ALBAY

Mantigue Island

The Mayon Volcano is located in the southern region of Luzon, the main island of the Philippines, approximately 500 kilometers south of Manila. Rising to an impressive elevation of 2,462 meters above sea level, it is renowned for its perfectly conical shape, which has captivated imaginations, inspired legends, and served as a muse for various forms of art. As the most active volcano in the Philippines and one of the most active globally, it has erupted more than 51 times in the past four centuries. The most devastating eruption occurred in 1814, resulting in the destruction of five towns in its vicinity. Despite these destructive events, the communities surrounding the volcano have displayed remarkable resilience, consistently rebuilding their towns and cultivating their fields in the aftermath of each eruption.
